Constipation Relief? My husband has been constipated for some time. We have tried all over the counter remedies and even some prescription medications. I have run out of ideas and he is very uncomfortable. Any suggestions?

JessicaLynn replied: "make sure your eating the right things lots of food with fiber!"

Rhea B replied: "I assume this is a chronic problem rather than an acute emergency. The colon doesn't work correctly unless it has enough water. You can take all the laxatives and fiber you care to, but it won't work unless there is water in the body to form bulk in the stools. He needs to get 35 grams of fiber each day and drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 lbs that he weighs. That means if he weighs 200 lbs,he needs to drink 100 ounces of water. Not coffee or soda, but actual water. I increase my fiber easily by eating a bread called Double Fiber Wheat made by Nature's Own. You can find it in regular grocery stores. Have him eat vegetables with each meal that are fiberous. It will clear up quickly once the extra fiber and water are added to the diet."

LadyLynn replied: "Well, my dear, it's your lucky day. You have come to the queen of constipation. LOTS OF WATER! Get a prescription for MIRILAX. It is sold everywhere over the counter, but is VERY expensive that way. You could buy one and see how it works. It's much better than Metamucil! I take it evey morning in water. (One TABLESPOON.) WALK! If you have a treadmill, that's fine. If not, take a brisk walk everyday. You two can take a walk together. It's the best exercise for everything, especially constipation. Work gradually up to 45 minutes a day , or more. Enjoy the scenery. Eat 1-3 apples a day WITH the peeling. Eat more fruit too. You should have a banana and a pear every day. Canteloupe and strawberries when in season. Eat a HI-FIBER cereal every morning. Kashi Go lean! It's sold at super WalMarts, Target, and Trader Joe's, if you're lucky enough to have that store. It has 10 grams of fiber! I don't drink milk, so I have a BIG bowl with water on the side. It's delicious. If you have Trader Joe's, they have a cereal called "Good Friends." It has 12 grams of fiber. Eat veggies every day. I love frozen peas. I also make a SIMPLE cole slaw that I eat every day. ( Just buy the cabbage already cut up-99 cents at WalMart or the 99 cent store. Add lemon juice, mayo, Equal, and pepper. It takes 5 minutes, and you can't ruin it) Or else, broccoli, carrots, whatever he likes. Baked Beans every day. (not too much.) Have your hubby do all those things. Oh! I forgot. Have him take 1 stool softener (generic ducosate sodium; found at any drug store) One a day is harmless. Do all those things, and your hubby will be whistling. Believe me, I've been through it all. In the meantime he can take a generic Fleet enema to help his discomfort. I always have one in the house, but haven't needed it for months! I'm on A LOT of pain meds. They all cause constipation. But I'm beating them!! I wish your husband the best of luck. :)"

SPARKY replied: "IF ALL OTHER SUGGESTIONS FAIL, TRY AN ENEMA FOR FAST RELIEF."

kadel replied: "He needs to walk and drink water. If he drinks a glass of water and he takes a walk every morning before work, he will find it much easier to go. My son had surgery and his dr told him to walk to deal with the constipation, and it worked. Now I drink water and take a walk when I get constipated and am running for the toilet when I get home."

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Try eating 10 to 20 oranges, 20 to 30 mandarins or 40 to 50 prunes a day for a few days."

flixter replied: "Try flax seed for constipation. Each serving of ground flax seed is enriched with dietary fibers that would surely work to induce regular bowel movement and fast track waste excretion. Best of all its a natural laxative and wouldn't bring the side effects typical with prescription or over the counter laxatives. You might want to read this article for reference: "

Is heavy mineral oil for constipation relief good for coating my bamboo cutting board? I'm not sure whether or not heavy mineral oil which I found in the constipation section of my local pharmacy is food safe or not. I presume it is ingested as it's a laxative but am not certain if it's adequate for the cutting board. If not can someone please tell me where to find the food safe stuff? Thanks in advance!

hvn_fun2 replied: "It would be ok, but a good vegetable oil is better. You don't want to take the chance of giving your friends/family/yourself the runs, lol, and mineral oil is heavy and leaves an unsavory film and aftertaste when left exposed to air for any length of time."

rachel l replied: "If it is plain mineral oil with nothing added to it, I would imagine it is safe to use on your cutting board. I don't think I have ever seen mineral oil specifically for constipation. You want to make sure there isn't anything besides mineral oil in it, or it will go rancid on the wood of your board. Also, vegetable oil, canola oil, and olive oil will all go rancid on your board."

JerryG replied: "Check any restaurant supply store for "Food Grade" mineral oil can be found. Any "salad" type of oil will go rancid."

constipation relief - constipation remedies for children? I am looking for natural constipation relief for babies. Can anyone please provide some guidance on constipation remedies for children? There is a lot of information on the web that talks about symptoms , and I know there are drugs that are recommended - but I am sure there is a natural way. Please let me know. Mary

rombump2 replied: "buy a bottle of fletchers castoria or change the baby formula to something with fiber"

Jejune replied: "You have to increase fibre intake. This means the introduction of more plant foods. Pureeing watery fruits like pears, peaches and prunes will be very helpful. Don't however let a baby have fruit juice concentrate. Or if this can't be done, there are formulas which include more fibre than others. The diet for a baby's diarrhoea is Bananas, Rice and Applesauce. So lessening these foods should help the constipation."

vintagechick replied: "I was watched a program about natural remedies a couple months ago and apparently eating figs and senna will help with constipation. The program is called grow your own drugs :D the link is here to make the actual syrup:... [you can buy senna from any health food shops] I'd suggest going to see your doctor if this get worse."

Bobby G replied: "Sunsweet Prune Juice is a natural way to help babies with constipation. It even works great for pregnant women as well. The Sunsweet website states the following about Constipation in Children: A mild bout of constipation in children is common, and usually lasts only a few days. Many children strain to pass a large or hard stool now and then. It is of little concern, so long as a normal pattern soon returns. As with constipation in adults prevention is often better than cure. Give your child a diet with plenty of fibre, lots to drink, and prune juice which is a good source of Sorbitol. For more information click on the link below:"

J replied: "fig serup- you can buy it as a drink in the chiller cabernet in supermarkets"

butterflylucin replied: "as some of the others stated, prune juice is best for babies. My child experienced severe attacks , she was bent over in pain screaming, and crying. I was told by a doctor to give one teaspoon of mineral oil to relieve the painful cramps and it would lubricate the bowels and this will stop the cramping and helps them to go fast. Babies are more sensitive and you must be careful with the juices, don't over do it because you could start a diaper rash from all the acid in the juices. prune juice once a week is good enough. Older ones, I gave a little mineral if I seen signs starting to arise. And of course, continue to give them healthy foods with fiber. (Oatmeal with raisins is good choice) good luck."

Polly replied: "Increase fibre in diet Avoid cooking in aluminium utensils or foil Increase fluids"

Andrew replied: "Prune juice, is good. Full of fiber and natural."

Predictable constipation relief? Can anyone recommend a gentle constipation reliever? And not to put too fine a point on it, are they actually as "predictable" as the adverts tend to claim?

Mysterious Meow replied: "Activia yogurt works really well for me. I don't get constipated very often so it's gentle enough and there are no....surprises if you know what I mean."

Cynical_Student replied: "I always find a good curry works for me... none of this tablet lark... I just go down to my local takeway..."

PooPooLaTrash replied: "Ask your pharmacist or doctor for a recommendation. Both will have records of the meds, if any, you are taking and/or medical conditions and can give you a more informed response. There are side effects with laxatives as with any other medication."

su_france2003 replied: "I think gentle and reliable are mutually exclusive where laxative medicines are concerned. As usual I recommend enemas or suppositories (depending on severity) because they're predictable and don't give you prolonged stomach cramps like some oral laxatives."

friendly person replied: "Try Senokot, it works every time."

get g replied: "Glycerin suppositories are predictable. Enemas are pretty predictable. Oral laxatives, less so. You can go with water and fiber which is good long-term and is too gentle to be very unpredictable. For more information:"

severe pregnancy constipation relief? I am 35 weeks pregnant, and i am experiancing the worst possibly constipation. this may be too much info, but i could actually feel it trying to come out, but it would... it feels hard as a rock! is there anything i can take to soften the stool... other than prune juice, cuz that never works for me.

detroit.mommy replied: "glycerin suppositories help big time."

wojos_women9 replied: "try that fiber powder stuff that you can add to anything, food or drink. It's tasteless and it's worked for me but I really didn't suffer from constipation for a really long time. But I regularly eat frozen berries or jarred peaches, or applesauce. Only a couple more weeks and you can take castor oil (it starts contractions, so you wouldn't want to do it now). Try the frozen berries, they're the best, and a good replacement for icecream in the middle of the night."

AJ replied: "Soap. Like pure soap, Cut a sliver off and slip it up. Don't use any frageranced, or an anti bacterial though."

moomoo110 replied: "how about an enema? i know it sounds awful but it works almost instantaneously. or try orange juice first thing in the morning, and apple juice works too, but if it is hard as a rock please consider the enemia, this will soften your stool too. and lastly, congratulations on the new baby!"

Ellen Kate will be here Feb 19th replied: "Walking helps! Respond promptly to the urge to defecate (weird word I know!) Drink 2-3 quarts of water/juice daily. Eat plenty of vegetables, beans."

Constipation relief advice? Hey. I was wondering if anybody might have any good ideas for dealing with constipation. It's been an issue now for about 3 days and it's starting to get uncomfortable.

jenn_d_n_stuff replied: "yogurt. def"

TheMad Catter replied: "Laxative."

William M replied: "coloxsl from the pharmacy , it is a stool softener , and plenty of water , it will activate the system"

Peachy Perfect replied: "There are medicinal ways such as laxatives to get rid of it if it's urgent, but to keep it from happening again you should eat lots of foods with fiber, and drink lots of water. Doing this will help relieve current constipation naturally also, and it's better for you than using laxatives. Plus you don't have to go to the store, since lots of this can be just found around your house. Common foods with lots of fiber include: Whole grain stuff (not just whole wheat) Nuts Peas Lentils Beans Spinach Broccoli Anything with "bran" in it Oats Carrots Peanut butter Prunes Good cereals with lots of fiber: Shredded Wheat Raisin Bran Anything else with "Bran" in the title You can also drink a spoonful of olive oil with those foods - gross, but it'll help the fibrous foods to move through you faster. The average person SHOULD get about 24 grams of fiber a day. But the average American only gets about 10 max. That's why we're always constipated. Look at nutrition labels and make sure you're getting enough "Dietary fiber". And drink lots of water. :)"

Veronica B replied: "take a laxative"

kitty replied: "eat some mexican candy you will go for sure if you eat alot.. these kinds may help you, tamarind grows in tropical and warm climates"

Miguel replied: "Frosted Mini-Wheats!! Those always make me have to take a sh*t! Also...coffee does the trick!....This is all in case you don't have laxatives. Also laying on your left side helps, so does squatting."

gyrlwithbigtruck replied: "Try apple juice/sauce, prunes or if you can drink it prune juice, white grape or pear juice, always plenty of water(your bowels need the lubrication), eat whole fruits with skin, and if you don't want to use stimulant laxitave there are senna pills, and the old stand by castor oil(just be sure to follow direction carefully)."

CaraMay replied: "Traditional Medicines brand "organic smooth move" herbal laxative tea. Tastes good and has never failed me. you can find it at any groceery store next to the tea or in the natural section"

American Man replied: "Not the best tasting cereal, but all Bran is the one. Its all natural too."

lnfinitelylnteresting replied: "The new Phillips Colon Health pills are great. They don't make you cramp or bloat, but they help you go to the bathroom. They are safe to take daily. I usually eat Activia, but I would rather take the pills... And they worked better than the yogurt or the fiber."

soisitok replied: "John, take a one or two qt plain warm water enema, you'll be back to your normal self with in minutes."

Patrick replied: "If you really want to end it quickly, and you're brave enough, you could always try the old finger in the pooper. I strongly recommend using a glove though lol."

Home remedies for Constipation relief ?? Hi, I have this constipation problem for 2 days. I dont want to take any stool softners or any tablets to relieve my constipation. Please suggest some useful home remedies that i can try and get rid of this problem as soon as possible. Thanks

thebest replied: "Exlax? Just push harder. It will come out. ;)"

Heather replied: "it's not a home remedy, but it works really well: get an enema. You'll be un-constipated in less than five minutes."

Lynnzie replied: "i my self find corn syrup to work alright. its really sweet. i actually like it on ice cream. it does not work instantly but it does work if u use it a couple times a day..."

Edie replied: "Foods high in fiber...Kashi, broccoli, prunes, etc... and lots of water."

BrownEyes1 replied: "Eat a couple of prunes with some hot tea. Drink plenty of water."

donna g replied: "Some time a glass of warm water helps. Or you could try some mineral oil, fleet enema, prunes. If you are lactose intolerant ice cream may work or a glass of milk. Hope these help..your situation can be miserable."

Pegasus90 replied: "Foods, fiber: cabbage cooked or raw; oatmeal cooked or raw And believe it or not, tummy crunch exercises, too. Are you drinking enough water (64 oz?)"

John D replied: "Man, sorry to hear you are having troubles.... especially on a Sat night! If you like hot and spicy foods, I find it to work best. The extra hot or spicyness, will actually cause your stomach to work correctly..."

Jon replied: "eat a lot of legumes, such as turnip greens, spinich, mustard greens, polk salad, cabage, and lettuce. This increases the amount of water in your bowel which increases the water content of your stool. However, too much of the above may cause you to have the "green apple quick trots". Get it? :)"

R S replied: "the best that thing that works and does not make u cramp is Milk of Magnesium. Just give it a try"

sounnn T replied: "Mulberry can be consumed as a juice, which provides excellent effects against gut diseases. It is mainly used in old people to relieve constipation. When half cup of blackberries is mixed with half cup of water, what you get is nothing short of an effective notion for constipation. For best results, have it first thing in the morning. Other cherries like Elderberry, Boysenberry etc can also be consumed in their juice forms. Rich in nutrients, they facilitate the peristaltic wave-like motion, thereby enhancing bowel movements."
